Title | Acrehowe Hill |
Description | The earthwork forms angled corner of a putative double banked and ditched enclosure, outer bank c.0.75 m high, inner bank c. 0.6 m high. Stone apparently visible (Bastow) so core may be rubble. Ditch is c.1.5 m deep. Feature extends for c.8 m along side of road and c.18 m at right angles to it. It lies on east side of a round barrow (PRN 392, also scheduled). The date and function of this earthwork are unknown; S.A.Moorhouse has suggested a medieval date but basis for this unknown; a more detailed, larger scale survey is required to provide a fuller assessment of this site. It seems from the 19th century literature, that there was no sign that the earthwork had ever been more than 36 feet x 80 feet. |
