TitleRoman Coin Hoard, Allerton Bywater Churchyard
DescriptionHoard of nearly 300 coins, probably silver but possibly bronze or a mixture of both. Coins dated from Marc Antony to Lucilla (circa 50 B.C. to A.D. 180): 11 of 1st. century B.C., 165 of 1st century A.D., the remainder 2nd century A.D. May have been contained within a copper vessel which had disintegrated. Found in 1923 in Allerton Bywater churchyard by a sexton digging a grave. Find spot originally cited as approximately SE 4181 2782, but was later amended to approx. SE 4185 2785. Considering the dates of the graves in these areas, the latter grid ref. is probably correct. Present location unknown.
