TitleRoman Coin Hoard, Idle Moor
DescriptionA hoard of Roman coins. Found circa 1800 during quarrying operations on Idle Moor. A single human burial, variously described as being encased either in a stone coffin (Cudworth, 1876?) or in a kind of grave walled round, ie., a stone cist (Turner,) was found during same quarrying. It is unclear from the references whether or not hoard and burial were associated with one another. Exact find spot unknown; grid ref. centred on Idle Moor. Present location unknown. A denarius of Hadrian recorded in the Cartwright Hall File as being in the possession of a descendant of the finder may be from this hoard. Obverse: HADRIANUS AUGUSTUS; laureate head. Reverse: COS III; female figure seated left. Coin clipped in one place on obverse.
