Description | Hoard of five silver Coritanian coins and eighteen Roman coins, thirteen of silver and five of bronze. The hoard was contained within a hollow bone, together with a small bronze box (possibly a seal box,) a bronze fibula of the 1st. century A.D. and two small bronze rings. Found on 7th November, 1893 on the estate of W. Brooke of Northgate Mount. Exact find spot unknown; grid ref. approximate. The five Coritanian coins are in the British Museum. The remainder of the hoard, including box, fibula and rings, is in the Tolson Museum (acc. no. AO.61:238:7?) The reverse of one of the Coritanian coins reads CARTIVEL (? L), which may perhaps be expanded to CARTIVEL(launos) (Allen, 1963.) O.S. SMR Card no. SE11SW 1. Found in the same general vicinity as Roman coin hoard PRN 1823. This hoard has apparently now been stolen. |
