TitleBarrowclough medieval settlement
DescriptionSite of medieval settlement of Barrowclough, on the south side of Barrowclough Lane runs from SE 1048 2527 to SE 1094 520. Earthwork Survey in 1989 identified what is believed to be a medieval settlement. Moorhouse (1989, p.21) sugests that the settlement may have been an example of ribbon development along an existing track, the eastern end of which joins the scheduled site of Magna Via (PRN 900). The Eastern 160 m stretch of Barrowclough Lane was surveyed in 1989 and two well preserved tenemants with building platforms evident were discovered at SE 1092 253. Moorhouse 1989 (p.21) suggests that the settlement which is the root of the Barrowclough Family, was in existence from the 13th century and probably earlier and perhaps as late as 1562 when a new messuage was granted on the southern side of Barrowclough Lane.
According to Moorhouse (1989, p. 21) Barrowclough Lane, earlier courses of which survive, was the former principal route up the Calder Valley. At SE 1160 2525, a banked edge of an earlier line lies in the field south, and at SE 1183 2526 an earlier line of Northcliffe Lane climbs the steep hillside into the woodland, which Moorhouse suggest was abandoned in favour of the alternative line. A deeper earlier line is also believed to run to the north of the modern path at SE1037 2534.
