Description | Denarius of Septimius Geta (A.D. 209 212) found inside a human skull. No mention of any other bone. Disturbed Roman burial with ferryman's fee? Found prior to October 7, 1848, on the slope above Magson House, Warley. Exact find spot unknown; grid ref. centred on slope above Magson House. Present location unknown. WYAAS also holds a copy 'History of Magson House' (date and source unknown). The text describes the finding a 'secret passage' at Magson Farm: 'Mr Leyland tells us of a secret passage from here [Magson Farm] going in the direction of Camp End, and of the Roman coins discovered here encased in the human skull. Mr Watson, in his History of Halifax, says: 'At the north east corner of Magson House is an uncommon hollow in the wall, which was discovered some time ago when a repair was made. The workmen, as I was informed, could see that the bottom of it, which was about equal with the foundations of the house, was flagged, but did not venture down to make further discoveries. As the house stands on the side of a hill it is probable that this cavity might be followed some distance underground''. |
