TitleCoin Hoard,
DescriptionBronze or Brass chest reportedly containing 1 cwt. of well preserved denarii. Later sources state that the earliest coins are of Julius Caesar and the latest temp. Pupienus. Contemporary notices in the Leeds Mercury only specifically mention issues of Galba to Marcus Aurelius; however, coins numbered many hundreds, and the writer only identified those which he had seen himself. Later sources also mention a silver image, not recorded in contemporary accounts. Found 24th February 1775 at Morton Banks or Elam, near Bingley.
Exact find spot unknown; grid ref. approximate. Collection of Roman Imperial Denarii from Broughton Hall, Skipton (presently in Leeds Museum) appear to be from a hoard found in the late 18th century, and may have formed part of the Elam hoard. It has been suggested that the chest and contents may have been the military chest of a Roman Legion.
