Description | A considerable number of Roman coins, some if not all of silver, including issues of Vespasian (A.D. 69 79,) Nerva, Trajan and Hadrian (A.D. 96 138,) have been found, apparently at various times and at various places in and around Sowerby. 1678: found in ploughing at Sowerby (Camden 1722). Prior to 1774: found a little below the town in a place called... Silver Field (Watson.) Prior to 1775: found above Sowerby near the highroad (Leland.) Given the vagueness of the latter two datings and the similarities in the descriptions of the coins found, it is possible that these are simply three separate references to a single find, specifically the one made in 1678 (HMW). Exact find spots unknown; grid ref. for 1678 finds is centred in field above Sowerby, but there is nothing on the old WYAS SMR card to indicate that this is anything other than notional. Similarly, an additional grid ref. of SE 045 235, cited on old SMR card 44024355 for the same site, seems to be purely speculative. References as cited on old SMR card confusing. Present location of finds unknown. |
