Title | Pre-Conquest Cross (one of three now in All Saints' Church) |
Description | One of three Pre Conquest crosses standing in All Saints' Church, Ilkley. The three crosses were originally placed outside the church, they were moved inside the church after excavations of 1982 1983 as their conditions were deteriorating due to weathering. This PRN is the largest of the three crosses (the others are PRN 7251 + PRN 7252). One of the faces of the shaft shows the Four Evangelists with symbolic heads carrying books in folds of drapery. Collingwood suggests that the low relief carving would have been picked out in colour, making this monument among the finest of its kind. On another face is a depiction of Christ enthroned with a palm branch in his left hand and the other hand uplifted in blessing. Below Christ are three panels of 'beasts'. On the other two faces are scrolls with rounded stems. This shaft is probably late 9th Century. On top of this shaft is a cross head, it was not found with the shaft but the stone is very similar. It was fixed to the shaft c.1914. On one face of the cross head is a winged angel and birds pecking fruit. On the other face is a bird and interlacing tendrils. |
