TitleStone hut circle settlement, Iveson Wood
DescriptionBecause this monument is located in dense woodland, early attempts at interpretation were tentative. A field inspection in 1988 concluded that ' There is some evidence to suggest that there are stone hut circles in this area. There is considerable natural stone spread about the wood, so that the putative circles are very difficult to spot' (ABS.) Since this comment the site has been investigated by English Heritage as part of their Monuments Protection Programme scheduling procedure.
The stone hut circle in Iveson Wood survives well. It is part of a wider area of prehistoric settlement which includes the stone hut settlement in Clayton Wood (1981).
English Heritage, 22/04/1999, Scheduled monument description for SAM 31528: The monument includes a stone hut circle settlement in Iveson Wood. The visible remains include two substantial hut circles between 12m and 14m in diameter. The rubble walls of the hut circles survive to a width of 3m and a height of 0.5m. Other visible remains relating to the settlement include small cairn 3m in diameter 0.6m high, 40m north east of the eastern hut circle, and the fragmentary remains of rubble banks which may have formed part of a prehistoric field system.
