TitleWetherby Bridge
DescriptionOriginal bridge constructed beginning C13. Reference to pontage for repair of bridge in 1315. May have been preceded by one which was Norman in date. Records of repairs exist throughout the Medieval and late Medieval periods. Medieval bridge probably less than 4m wide and only comprised four round arches; at some time prior to the beginning of C19, the southern pair of arches were either destroyed or demolished, and four new arches were constructed in their place. Present length approx. 80m. Twice widened, once by addition to east side in the latter half of C18, once again in the 1820's by addition to the west side. The original stonework is clearly visible on the undersides of the arches.
Please note: as this SAM has an old monument number, there is no formal scheduling description for it (April 2009). However, in the file there is a map of the scheduled area and an NMR monument report relating to the site.
