TitleOwlcotes
DescriptionOwlcotes is the site of a substantial medieval settlement which survived into the nineteenth century. All buildings on the site were demolished during the first half of the 20th century. The site lies below the brow of a northward facing spur of land to the south of the Leeds ring road. During its peak of population in the fourteenth century, Owlcotes contained about nine families; by the nineteenth century this had been reduced to two. Although the settlement was primarily dependent on agriculture, this was supplemented by small industry. Tanning was a thriving trade in Owlcotes in the 16th century and may have originated as a local industry during the 13th century. Documentary references to clothiers living in the hamlet exist from the mid 17th century. Farming and industry had ceased altogether by the late 1800s; the site was inhabited thereafter by millworkers until its abandonment in the 1920s. The SAM lies within a development area. APs (poor quality) add no useful information.
Please note: as this SAM has an old monument number, there is no formal scheduling description for it (April 2009). However, in the file there is a map of the scheduled area and an NMR monument report relating to the site.
