TitleIreland Wood
DescriptionGrid ref. centred on scheduled area. Small area of low earthworks and low stone foundations, apparently forming rectilinear enclosures and buildings. Possible terracing to NE of site. No dating evidence, but forms suggest Post Roman? Land, which belongs to Cookridge Hospital, is fenced off but the monument is under considerable threat from casual vandalism. 1977/8 excavation carried out unsupervised by local amateur G. Dunn, who cleared the interior of one of the rectilinear structures; unfortunately this resulted in its destruction by vandals shortly afterwards. Requires detailed site visit and complete survey, and Yorkshire Regional Health Authority should be encouraged to make the area more secure.
