TitleShaw Hill
DescriptionThree collared urns found...`at the bottom of the walk near Shaw hill, leading to the house in Skircoat called Heath. They lay in a line one yard deep, and one yard asunder (apart), with their mouths downwards...' (Watson, 1775). One urn contained a cremation, the other two were broken.
The complete urn belongs to the Secondary Series of the collared urn tradition, and in shape and decoration belongs to the north western style (see further detail in Varley, 1973). The site is now a residential built up area, c.half a mile SW of Halifax parish church. The other two urns are represented by 7 sherds from the collar of one urn and one sherd from another of the same type (see Varley 1973 for details of this pottery). The sherds are in the Bankfield museum school loan collection (the Bankfield Museum material has now all been moved to the Tolson Museum, Huddersfield).
N.B. Mr. R.A.Varley has reported, on a visit to WYAS (25/10/1991) that two urns represented by 7 and 1 sherd respectively, may in fact have been found in Midgley.
