Title | Bull Stone |
Description | An upright stone of close grained millstone grit, 6 ft. high with sides near ground 3'6 x 1'10, standing (1963) in middle of field south of the Royalty Inn, Yorkgate. O.S. Field Inspectors obtained no information concerning its original purpose. Margary (II 1957) refers to it as thought (by some) to be possibly a milestone on the road (Roman Road 72b which lies to the south). Its name 'Bull stone' or 'Bull stoop' is said (Slater 1880) to arise from past practise of tethering bulls to it (for baiting by dogs). |
