Description | New Bridge marked on c. 1698 estate map, said on record card to be in Gawthorpe Hall area but grid ref. is in middle of woodland further north on Harewood Bank. English Heritage's listing states that the current bridge is initialled and dated 'TM and J 1837', suggesting that the bridge may have been rebuilt, or renewed at this time. The bridge is built of ashlar, in the Classical style, and has a single segmental arch with roll moulding above the voussoirs flanked by moulded circles. Projecting band supports a balustraded parapet with vase shaped balusters and chamfered coping. Abutments, slightly cut back, have solid parapets terminating in square piers. That to the north east corner is inscribed with the above date. The eastern parapet is inscribed 'E Watson 1838' (probably the name of the architect). To the base of each pier are bullet shaped stones to deflect carriage wheels. (Text edited from English Heritage's LBO description) |
