TitleHarewood
DescriptionEarthworks of deserted medieval settlement, possibly those of the medieval village of Harewood, to the north of Church Lane extending from SE 315 453 to SE 317 453 and surrounded by a plantation to north and south. Not noted by O.S. Field Inspector in 1963, but consists of shallow terraces into the hillside connected by terraced ways. One of the latter runs down hillside towards Harewood Bridge and a branch from this may have lead towards Harewood Castle. Shallow profile may suggest early medieval abandonment. May have been continuous with a settlement, which may be indicated by earthworks (PRN 2613), but the profile on these latter is less weathered. A field visit in 03/2010 showed that terraces existed leading down the hillside from SE 31880, SE 45410 to SE 32000, SE45470.
To the east of the settlement earthworks lie two prominent 19th c. bell pits with associated earthworks and trackways. Thes may have obliterated further earthworks in this area. Part of area grossly disturbed by modern quarrying.
