Title | Harewood medieval borough. |
Description | Area extending for 400m west to east across the A61 at the present entrance to Harewood Park, formerly occupied by the tenements (burgages) of the medieval borough. The site is not precisely documented but was probably founded in first decade of 13th. century. Its position and layout is marked on the 1698 estate map. Documents suggest that the site survived into the 15th. century. The western part was levelled c. 1750 and is now within park in an area used for fairs etc. This is now badly disturbed grassland where many medieval finds have been made, including a dispersed coin hoard of Edward I (info. from S. Moorhouse, found by Halifax Artefact Collectors Club). The eastern part of the site, east of the A61, was developed as part of the estate village attached to Harewood House and the properties here may reflect the original tenement boundaries to some degree. Possible earthwork survival in the west part between the grassland and park entrance, in woodland. This site should not be confused with the abandoned site of the medieval village of the same name (PRN 1366). |
