TitleBriggate
DescriptionCremation burial in urn found in 1745 in Briggate, Leeds. No exact find spot established. The urn was found in an upright position, mouth upwards, 2 ft. below the surface in a field (owned by Mr Alderman Denison) at the top of Briggate. It apparently contained calcined bones and a stone hammer.
The urn is collared and about 12 inches high (Wardell 1853). All the finds were taken possession of by Mr Denison and by 1853 were presumed lost. Vessel is illustrated in Wardell, 1853 and the drawing could be taken to represent a Bronze Age collared urn. Lewthwaite (1869) appears to think that a flint axe head was found in `a Roman urn' in 1745 and this is probably the same burial urn mentioned above. However, he refers to a stone hammer head also found in the R.Aire somewhere near Briggate. Wardell illustrates an axe hammer rather than a stone axe as having been found on Briggate, and it is likely that the additional find of a stone axe from the R.Aire (of which no record in SMR) has been confused with the Briggate find.
