Description | Round barrow, 160' south of another (PRN 1297), both part of a larger group of round barrows, double pit alignment and a henge (PRN 1296). Pacitto (1969) states that it had not been previously recorded. Levelled by ploughing. 1962 excavn. showed complete lack of stratigraphy but an oval grave pit, 5 deep and c. 4'x5' found cont. crouched inhumation. Body on left side facing south with notched flint dagger at pelvis, and other frags of burnt human bone . Surrounding grave at distance of c. 12' was remains of a circular ditch of which only 2 segments remained, rest presumed destroyed by ploughing. Burial on display in Wakefield City Museum (in 1987). Name `Round Hill' occurs on 1st ed. O.S. 6 map. |
