Description | Round barrow, now levelled, comprising 2 concentric ring ditches, 55' and 75' in diameter in Angel Moon Field (mistakenly called Roundhill Field by Greenwell, who was probably referring to a wider area known to him as Round Hill; also note same mistake by RCHM who also refer to this site as being on Round Hill). Site is part of a larger group of round barrows, double pit alignment and henge (PRN 1296). Opened in 1811 by a Mr. Hall and excavated. 1866 by Greenwell (his barrow no. CLXI). Several skeletons had been found in 1811 and 1863 in the upper part of the barrow including one in armour attributed by Greenwell to the Anglo Saxon period. Also found were at least 1 BA cremation and an inhumation in a cist. RCHM record refers to finds of burials made in 1871 (by Greenwell?) on east side of barrow, including 2 cremations, 1 inhumation below which was a cremation and an urn, another probable cremation and a cist burial. N.B. available records are unclear as to what precisely was found and by whom. Barrow was 7' high in 1866 and Greenwell found cremation of a child, a male inhumation with a cremation below it, and a crouched inhumation at the centre with a beaker and bronze awl. Paccito's 1962 excavation examined the whole area of the now degraded barrow for burials. Some stratification remained, notably in the inner ditch, but evidence was found to suggest that the mound had been reconstructed at some time. The only other double ditched round barrow site known in the county is that showing as a cropmark at Wentbridge (PRN 875) where the concentric circles are much more widely spaced. Name `Round Hill' occurs on O.S. 1st ed. 6 map. |
