DescriptionAn area of cropmarks and excavated sites comprising at least 7 round barrows, (PRNs 995,996,997,1297,1298,1300,1303) a double pit alignment (PRN 1299) and a henge (PRN 1304). Cropmarks in some parts are confused and the possibility of more ring ditches exists, particularly just south west of the henge (SE 473 241). Two possible ring ditches at SE 4734 2406 and 4733 2932 (AP CUC BJN 41) are more likely to be cultivation marks.
The whole area is possibly demarcated from prehistoric/RB field systems and enclosures immediately to the south and west (PRNs 993,1290) by a pit alignment (PRNs 994,1294). See individual PRNs for more details of the group which is the largest group of such monuments in the county. The barrows in particular are generally much larger than other ring ditches showing as cropmarks and the henge is unique.
At present scheduled status applies only to a part of the henge (PRN 1304). 1996 APs include some poor quality 'linear' cropmarks, probably much of natural origin?, at SE 475242; also a broad amorphous circular mark in the grass of the golf course in the power station grounds (SE 476245) most likely an artefact of more recent activity (it is marked as an oval mound on the modern 1:10000 O.S.)
