TitleIron Age/Romano-British Cropmark Landscape (Group Record)
DescriptionExtensive area of cropmarks (800 x 800 m. centred on above grid ref.) incorporating a small corner of field type enclosure (PRN 980), two small rectangular enclosures (PRNs 979, 1291), and a larger, almost rectangular enclosure (PRN 981), all dispersed through a rectilinear field system which is traversed SE to NW by a lane. Smaller area of linear ditches (PRN 978) may be continuations of this landscape. This complex is bounded on the NE side by pit alignments (PRNs 1294, 1293) which seem to separate the complex from an area of round barrows and a henge (PRN 1296).
A stone coffin with reputedly decapitated burial (PRN 1289), probably Roman, was found at c. SE 464 241 within this area.
1995 AP adds a major new feature, a large oval enclosure (PRN 6286) sitting in the supposed IA/RB landscape. 1996 APs show just how enormous in scale is the ditch from SE 4720 2395 to SE 4699 2381 this may be a continuation of the large ditch running to the NNW from the last grid ref. The field in which this major ditch lies also shows other fragmentary linear marks and some marks of probable natural origin.
