Title | Roman Stone Coffin |
Description | Padgett refers to a stone coffin found in 1822 at Paper Mill Garth, Spittal Hardwick which was subsequently removed to Fryston Hall. It is now kept at Pontefract Castle. Paper Mill Garth is located at above grid ref. on 1779 estate map (Leeds City Archives Har. Maps 89). The coffin contained male skeleton with the skull between the legs leading to speculation that this was the burial of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. It is tentatively taken to be a Roman burial by Faull (1981). If so it may relate directly to the extensive area of cropmarks of a rectilinear field system with dispersed enclosures which surrounds it (PRNs 978, 1290). |
