Title | Human remains found at Spofforth Hill, Wetherby |
Description | Human remains, an earthenware vessel and a piece of flint were found in 1901 on Spofforth Hill, c.300yds above the railway and 60yds from the Wetherby Harrogate road. The remains were in a hole at a depth of c. 5 feet. Several other skeletons have been dug up in the vicinity of Spofforth Hill and also bones of extinct animals according to E.Bogg (ref. cited below). The area in which these finds were made is now largely residential. Present location of finds unknown. The O.S. suggest on their record card that these burials may be associated in some way with the RB settlement at Wetherby (PRN 1710), but the association of flint and the pottery (if prehistoric) would argue against this. |
