Title | Stubhouse |
Description | Stubhouse represented by one farm today although name (stubhusum) implies several houses in late Anglo Saxon/early medieval period. Vill in 1086. O. S. Field Inspector reports no trace of more extensive settlement (1961); buildings shown on a map of c.1730 at SE 3021 4344 may be additional farm buildings. Ground still (1961) littered with stone in this area south of the present farm but no obvious remains of homesteads. APs show traces of broad ridge and furrow in fields west of present farm, highlighted in light snow. This appears to be cut by at least two curvilinear banks of uncertain date or origin. The possible medieval settlement of Burden (PRN 437) may lie immediately west of these features which may relate partly to that place rather than Stubhouse. (1996 APs (WY 280/24 26) really show Stubhouse and vicinity incidentally and add no further detail. |
