Description | Field House Farm, Walton. Late 18th to early 19th century model farm. The provided grid reference marks the position of the quadrangle of agricultural sheds to the north of the group. Field House Farm was the subject of a photographic survey by Nuttal Yarwood and Partners Limited (Chartered Architects) in 2005. The photographs are accompanied by a set of architect's plans of field house dated 2005. Both are held by WYAAS (Nuttal Yarwood and Partners Limited. Chartered Architects. 2005). The photographic record was probably produced as part of, or in response to, a planning application for residential development. The details are unavailable. The images and plans depict a quadrangle of agricultural buildings to the north with a cottage and farm to the south: The house is double pile with a hall entry plan and is two storeys (SE 44334 47657). The main south facing elevation has a central doorway which is flanked by two single storey bay windows. The symmetrical arrangement is continued on the first floor with three windows, the central one, positioned over the door is slightly smaller. The first floor windows have flat arches. The chimneys are internal gabled ridge stacks. Attached to the eastern end is a two storey extension with similar windows. The cottages occur as a semi detached pair of a single unit houses (SE 44315 47675). They are of two stories. The eastern frontage is book matched with a central front door and a single window on the ground floor. There are three 1st floor windows. Middle one is positioned above the two doors. The roof gables have copings. The absence of chimney stacks on the architect's drawings and centrally positioned window on the first floor could indicate that this range had a service function. The quadrangle consists of several sheds and a barn (SE 44322 47708). The barn forms the southern part of the range and is five or six bays long. The barn is tall with vent slits and has a pair of centrally positioned opposing cart entrances with opposing pedestrian entrances at the eastern end. The barn has queen post trusses. Along the western edge of the quadrangle is a single storey arcaded with five arched cart openings. On the southern part of the eastern edge of the quadrangle is a two storey, four bay shed. The upper floor is accessed by an external flight of stays. The northern edge of the quadrangle has six stables or similar. The buildings are fairly uniform in their construction material; coursed quarried magnesian limestone with brick additions and pantile roofs. Group can be described as a late 18th to early 19th model farm. Present c.1850 with little change to the building footprint since (OS 6' 1st edition. c.1850. Sheet 189) (Lunn, K.R. (WYAS). 2013. Description of Field House Farm based on photographic images and historic mapping. Description ground in digital record only and not on file at WYAAS). Group appears extant and converted to residential use (https://maps.google.co.uk/. Web site accessed 19/12/2013). |
