Title | Forge House, Walton-in-Ainsty |
Description | Forge House, Walton in Ainsty. 18th or early 19th century house. Forge House and the plot of land to the rear, a former medieval toft, were the subject of an archaeological assessment by Peter Thornborrow (WYAS) in 1988. This was probably in response to a planning application to develop the plot of land to the rear of Forge House (Leeds Council planning reference number 88/31/00246). The photographic images produced by the assessment are held by WYAAS (Thornborrow, P.H. (WYAS). 1988). The images depict a two storey magnesian limestone built house. This is a hall entry, single pile house with gabled roof. The chimney stacks are internal ridge stacks situated one at each gable. The central door way has a flat arch with stone voussoirs and a rectangular fan light window. This is flanked on either side by a window also with a flat arch. There are matching windows above these and a smaller window, now blocked window above the doorway. These finish at eave height. The gables have coping stones and the chimneys are of ashlar. A later 18th to early 19th century date seems feasible. The house has a rear wing which doesn't appear to be present in 1894 (OS 1st edition 25'). The yard to the rear contained sheds and a smithy at this time. (Lunn, K.R. (WYAAS). 2013. Description of Forge House based on photographic images and historic mapping. Description found in digital record only and not on file at WYAAS). Thornborrow’s concern was with the impact of the development on the tofts to the rear of Forge House. Thornborrow considered that these should be preserved in their entirety. The mature hedges were also a consideration. (Thornborrow, P.H. (WYAS). 1988. Notes regarding plot of land to rear of Forge House). |
