TitleWaterton's Grave, Stubbs Wood, Walton
DescriptionWaterton's grave, Stubbs Wood, Walton. Grave of Charles Waterton. 1865.

'The archaeo historical features of Waterton Park were the subject of an archaeological assessment by Peter Thornborrow (WYAS) in 1993. 'Waterton's grave' was one of the features identified. The fieldwork notes are compiled below:
Grave of Charles Waterton, famous naturalist of Walton Hall. 1865. The monument is of dressed stone with a concrete cross which replaced the original in the 1950s. Cast iron railings.
The grave is built on the edge of a former lake. At the north end is the free standing cross set in a square base with an inscription on north face in marble. Set behind the cross is a railed enclosure with dwarf walls and chamfered copings roughly dressed into which is set iron railings (a replacement) with spearheads. Waterton was brought here by boat and buried between his two favourite oak trees, the stumps of which survives.
At the time of visiting, the grave was in fair condition but the railings were rusty.
Inscription reads:
