Title166 Westgate, Wakefield
Description166 Westgate, Wakefield.

'Early mid C16. 2 storeys, two windows. Steeply pitched swept slated roof with ridge and end stacks. Painted brick. C19 sash windows under segmental arches. Later C19 shop front. Yard entrance at left'.
(English Heritage listed building description. Date listed 01/02/1979. http://list.english heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1273186. Web site accessed 12/12/2013).

166 Westgate was the subject of an archaeological assessment by Peter Thornborrow in 1991. The photographic images produced by the assessment are held by WYAAS (Thornborrow, P.H. 1991).
The images clearly depict timber framing, with closed truss, though purlins and braced (from wall post to tie beam) wall frame, which is exposed on the western gable. There is also an external chimney stack on this elevation. The building is of two bays and is two stories high, the upstairs windows finishing at eave height. It has a two storey centrally projecting rear wing. The roof is covered with slate and has a centrally placed ridge stack. A through passage which connects to a rear yard is present on the left hand side of the front Westgate elevation.
The inserted windows are shallow arched with small paned Yorkshire sashes. The left hand side of the front elevation contains a 19th century (probable) shop front. These features sit in a brick wall which appears to be an applied feature (i.e. a timber wall frame may be present behind the brick wall).
If parallels can be made to 162 Westgate, which is also attributed to the 16th century, this building may have started life as a timber framed open hall house with modification occurring in the Queen Anne, Georgian and Victorian periods.
