Title88-90 Westgate (demolished), Wakefield
Description88 90 Westgate (demolished), Wakefield. Former houses/shops demolished in 1986.

88 90 Westgate were the subject of an archaeological assessment in 1986 prior to demolition. The photographic images produced by the assessment are held by WYAAS (Anon. 1986.).
The images depict what appear to be, from the front elevation facing Westgate, a pair of three storey town houses with book matched frontages. The building is of brick and rendered to the front and south side. The ground floor is occupied by two shops; with a modern and a 19th century frontage. The two first floor windows of each property have flat arch voussoirs with projecting stone sills. The paired windows of the top floor are narrower and finish at eave height. The roof is of slate and is gabled. There are two chimney stacks, one occurs on the southern gable, the other centrally placed in the roof slide to the rear.
A two storey out shut projects from the rear of the building; the roof being cat slide at this side. The windows on this elevation are more irregular in positioning and proportion with a slightly earlier (Georgian?) appearance. The yard to the rear was undeveloped at the time of the assessment.
A property with a comparable foot print was present in this location c.1850 (OS Wakefield Town Plan. 1:1056 scale. c.1850). The boundaries of the time clearly show that the site was part of Wakefield's medieval core with burgage plots running from both sides of Westgate. Medieval/post medieval building fabric and below ground archaeological remains are a possibility in this area. The site remains undeveloped (https://maps.google.co.uk/. Web site accessed 10/12/2013).
