TitleWell in Basement of Wakefield Theatre Royal, Wakefield
DescriptionWell in Basement of Wakefield Theatre Royal, Wakefield. Possibly medieval stone lined well.

A stone lined well was identified in the basement of the Wakefield Theatre Royal in 2006. Chris Constable (Senior Historic Buildings Officer. WYAAS) made an archaeological assessment of the feature. The photographic images produced by the assessment are held by WYAAS (Constable, C. (WYAAS). 2006). Constable describes the feature as being located to the rear of the property under the stage area of the former 18th century theatre. The well is built from broadly squared sandstone with limited facing. The stone is well cut, and curved where necessary, some variation in stone size which are broadly followed in the coursing.
There are two steps in the well, built of wood with some modern concrete over the top of them. Brick is used to support the upper part of one of the steps which would appear to be part of the original build.
The well is 22 feet deep, according to the theatre.
Probably 18th century but must predate construction of the first phase of the theatre in 1760.
The theatre intended to make a display of the feature.
