Description | In July 2012 Archaeological Services WYAS (ASWYAS) undertook a geophysical survey (magnetometer and resistance) in the north east corner of Friarwood Valley Gardens, Pontefract to inform WYAAS about the presence/absence of archaeological remains that may be associated with St Richard’s Friary (PRN 3403), which was at the time being investigated by the Pontefract and District Archaeological Society immediately to the east of the gardens. The north of the survey area was under a formal rose garden, whilst the southern half of the site was under managed lawn. The total area of the survey was approximately 0.5 hectares. The results of the survey were particularly difficult to interpreted, partly because the small survey area and the fact that the site has been landscaped, and used as a public space for more than a century. The resistance survey, however, did identify several area of very high resistance which, although can not be confidently interpreted, could relate to structural remains. For further details please see the full report (ASWYAS, 2012), a copy of which is on file in the HER. |
