Description | In May 2012 Wessex Archaeology undertook a watching brief at Castleford Fire Station, Beancroft Road in advance of the erection of a 2 storey building incorporating close call housing accommodation for firefighters. Wessex Archaeology has already undertaken a desk based assessment for a 250m radius of the development site which had indicated the potential for Roman remains surviving in the vicinity (PRNs 2230, 2231, 2233, 2237, 3084, 7366, 7410 – see Wessex Archaeology, 2012a). The watching brief monitored the excavation of the foundation trenches, and partial excavation of a soakaway. No archaeological remains were identified during the monitoring, and undisturbed natural clays were found at depths of between 0.4m and 1.1m. For further details please see the final report (Wessex Archaeology, 2012b) a copy of which is on file in the HER. |
