Title | ?War Memorial (probably demolished), Tuel Lane, Warley |
Description | Neo classical architectural feature, probably demolished. Position provided by the HER record is approximate. WYAAS archives holds a copy of an architectural feature situated on the west side of Tuel Lane. The image was taken by Peter Thornborrow (WYAS) c.1989 and the structure has been interpreted, as written on the photograph, as a war memorial, although very tentatively. The image depicts a neo classical portico built of ashlar. The architrave rests on three plain columns with round bases and Ionic capitals. The frieze is decorated with fluted tri glyphs. Above is a moulded cornice. Frames in the spaces between the columns suggests glazing and possibly doors. Projecting from the rear of portico are the remains of a wall in rusticated stone with a fragmentary window or blind arch, a string course above and fragments of another possible opening at first floor level. The feature could not be firmly identified on historic mapping and its function could not be determined. Nor could it be identified on current on line map resources, the location provided by the HER report was estimated based of the alignment of buildings in the background of the photographic image (https://maps.google.co.uk/. Web site accessed 30/01/2014). The interpretation as a war memorial cannot be disputed on available evidence; the feature could equally be the formal entrance to a high status 19th or early 20th century building such as house or commercial or civic offices. The general area was occupied an iron foundry (Bank Foundry. See PRN 6870) and a high status house (Bank House) in 1894 (OS 25' 1st edition. c.1892). |
