Title | Upper Saltonstall Barn (Ridings Barn), Warley |
Description | Upper Saltonstall Barn (Ridings Barn), Warley. Altered 18th to early 19th century barn. Upper Saltonstall Barn was the subject of a planning application in 2004 for 'Conversion of barn to dwelling' (Calderdale Council planning reference number 04/01195/CON). The architect's plans associated with this application have been retained by WYAAS (Hetherington Associates. 2004). The plans form the index for a photographic survey of the barn undertaken in 2004 (Wood, R. 2004). This may have been in response to an archaeological condition set on this planning application [no further information found in WYAAS archive]. The images and plans depict a stone built barn. The barn was heavily modified probably in the 20th century and the arrangement of original openings is hard to discern. Notable exterior features are gable wall coping stones with shaped kneelers and quoins. The south west elevation, partially covered by a 20th century covered stock yard, has a central cart entrance with a pedestrian entrance to the right. This evidence suggest that the barn forms a common Pennine type of byre barn of the 18th or early 19th century; with a central open area and a mistal with hay loft to either side. It is probable that the cart entrance did not have an opposing cart entrance on the north east elevation. There is an entrance in a similar position but this is a pedestrian entrance and it is raised due this side being built back to earth. There are doors and windows on the gable elevations. Some openings here are modern insertions. The photographic images show three queen post roof trusses of sawn softwood. The purlins butt the principal rafters. At the time of inspection loft and partition timbers were still in place as were stone flags on the floor. There was a building with a similar footprint in this position in 1849 (OS 6' 1st edition. Sheet 215). (Lunn, K.R. (WYAAS). 2014. Description of Upper Saltonstall Barn based on architect’s plans, photographs and historic mapping.
