Rough Hall was inspected by Colum Giles in 1980 as part of the WYAS/RCHME Rural Houses Survey. Giles briefly described this as a19th century house with attached late 18th century single cell cottage (Giles, C. (WYAS/RCHME). 1980).
19th century house has a central lobby or hall entrance with a ‘polite’ 19th century symmetrical south facing front facade. It is stone built and of two storeys. The two internal apex chimney stacks are set on each gable wall. The gables having coping stones. There matching ground floor and first floor single light windows flanking the central doorway on both sides. There is also window above the door on the first floor. An open porch protects the entrance.
The late 18th to early 19th century cell attached to the house's western gable is also stone built with two storeys although it is much shorter and built in a vernacular style. The ground floor has a three light mullioned window on the left with a doorway on the right. The first floor has a five light mullioned window. Only the western gable wall (the gable wall not attached to the house) has coping stones. The internal apex chimney stack is situated on this gable wall. All the openings have plain square surrounds and mullions. The multi light windows suggest an element of domestic textile production.
