TitleSurvey of a Ring Cairn, Burley in Wharfedale
DescriptionASWYAS carried out archaeological surveys of six prehistoric scheduled monuments on Ilkley and Burley Moors . Field work was undertaken in December 2009, February and March 2010. ASWYAS were commissioned by Natural England as part of a Higher Level Agri environment scheme (HLS) to inform the HLS scheme for the sites which aimed to improve the management and condition of the historic and natural environment on the moors. The survey matched the standards of a Level III survey as defined by English Heritage (2007).
The survey work was undertaken using a survey grade Trimble 5800 GPS device using a virtual reference station (VRS). Each site was photographed using a high resolution digital camera.
The ring cairn was completely covered with heather. This lack of prominence along with the monuments location away from footpaths leads to the monument being at no immediate risk. If there is any risk of the heather cover being diminished, the site should be reassessed.
The survey report includes scale drawings of the ring ditch and shows the location of nearby carved rocks.
