Description | Old Marsh, Warley. House with 17th century masonry. WYAAS archives holds a reference to photographic negatives held in the Calderdale Archives (HAS/E/J.44)[no further information]. The reference describes the images as showing a structure named Old Marsh with good quality 17th century masonry including recessed mullioned windows on two floors. The location of Old Marsh, with reference to the available evidence, gives some confusion. On current OS mapping Old Marsh is located and named at SE 05846 24171 (OS Master Map 2011). The row of cottages in this position does not display obvious 17th century features but this may be the result of modernisation (https://maps.google.com/. Web site accessed 23/01/2014). On late 19th century OS mapping this group of buildings is named New Marsh. The name Old Marsh refers to the larger settlement running east along Burnley Road towards Causeway Head. English Heritage listed building designation for 22, Burnley Road which is 40m to the east. This reads: 'Probably mid C17, first floor late C17. Rubble brought to course, first floor of coursed squared stone; stone slate roof. 2 storeys, single cell with 2nd bay set back on right added c1985 in keeping. C17 cell: quoins, no longer to ground floor left. On right, 1985 door in chamfered quoined surround with deep lintel; to its left a 5 light double chamfered mullion window; both under continuous drip mould which rises above doorway. First floor: a 5 light single chamfered mullion window. Coping and c1985 stack to left end. Left return: table stones from lower adjoining barn (removed). Interior: shallow segmental arched stone fireplace; spine beam' (English Heritage listed building description. Date listed 19/07/1988. http://list.english heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1134553. Web site accessed 23/01/2014). The 17th century features could refer to those features observed on the above photographic images. The problem is; 22 Burnley Road is un ambiguously one of a late 19th to early 20th century short terraced row of houses. This is confirmed by appearance and map evidence (OS 25' 1st edition. c.1894: OS 6' 3rd edition. c.1909. Sheet 230). There could be some confusion over the address provided by EH as the current Old Marsh contains the address 22a Old Marsh, Halifax and is set just off Burnley Road. Another possibilities are that the Old Marsh referred to on the photographic reference above refers to a house which formed part of the wider Old Marsh settlement; or that there is another Old Marsh in Warley not yet identified. |
