TitleOld Hall, Shelf (now demolished)
DescriptionEnglish Heritage recorded the Old Hall in 1961;
The house was built perhaps in the early 16th century as a timber framed hall house with at least one aisle. The hall was reconstructed and the timber was either replaced or encased in stone in 1629, that date being carved in the door lintel 'I P 1629 '. The lower end of the house was rebuilt in stone and remodelled to give a gabled projection in the south front as a separate building operating probably...soon after the remodelling of the hall. In the late 18th 19th century an outshut larger than the aisle was built behind the hall and a two storey wing was added, perhaps replacing some earlier projection behind (to the north) the lower east end bay.
Prior to its demolition, the Old Hall was recorded by Queensbury and Shelf Urban District Society as;
There were three dwellings in this building but it is now unoccupied and completely unfit for occupation...
...The stone building with its stone slated roof is dated 1629. From the windows several of the stone mullions have been cut away to form larger lights and a second doorway has been cut near the original one.

Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion outlines the owners of the hall and gives the location as the current site of the Village Hall.

A more detailed architectural description along with drawn floorplans is held on file at the offices of West Yorkshire HER.
