TitleArchaeological Evaluation, Clitherow House, Otley
DescriptionAn archaeological evaluation was undertaken by JB Archaeological Services within the footprint of the new extension to the north of Clitherow House, Otley in March 2012. The work consisted of the excavation of a single 5m by 1m trench, and was conducted to investigate the potential for the survival of any archaeological associated with the medieval Bishops Palace (PRN 1412), thought to have been located within the local vicinity.
The results of the evaluation recorded the presence of a late 19th/20th century garden type soil overlying a series of natural water lain deposits. The garden soil had been truncated and cut away during the construction of an earlier extension to Clitherow House. The only archaeological features recorded were two late 19th century walls which by referring to the historic Ordnance Survey mapping could be seen to date from between 1850 and 1890, and were probably part of a series of outbuildings to Clitherow House. No evidence for the medieval Bishops Palace was recorded.
