Lower Heys was the subject of an archaeological assessment by Colum Giles in 1980 as part of the WYAS/RCHME Rural Houses Survey. The photographic images and rough sketch plan produced by the assessment are held by WYAAS (Giles, C. (WYAS/RCHME). 1980). The brief fieldwork notes are summarised below:
Stone house, 18th century. Remodelled in the 19th century. House of three cells, but with two main doors. South front is in waterhot masonry in different(?) masonry. Possible evolution of two cell house (central eastern cells) with 19th century cell added to the west. East cell made into cottage at this time, with main house now occupying central and western cells. Laithe added later.
