The brief fieldwork notes are transcribed below: 'Stone aisled barn. Late 17th century. Five bay double aisled barn. Two internal trusses with principal rafter, single 'V' brace form; two with truncated king posts. 'V' brace forms. Presence of large barn implies the existence of a house at least contemporary with barn. House demolished and rebuilt in the 20th century'. (Giles, C. (WYAS). 1980. 'Warley. Higher Oldfield'). The Barn at Higher Oldfield was the subject of a planning application in 2004 for Roof lights, replacement window and internal alterations (Listed Building Consent) (Calderdale Council planning reference number 04/02637/LBC). The architect's elevation drawings associated with this application have been retained by WYAAS (Anon. 2004). Elizabeth Chamberlin (WYAAS) made an archaeological assessment of this site as part of the planning process. Chamberlin's comment are below: 'This building has been redeveloped since its listing dated to 1988 (the development must have happened earlier than this). The cart entries have been removed and three of the four external walls rebuilt in concrete blocks. Original fabric surviving in the barn [consists] of a pair of aisle posts and a single gable wall; the truss over these parts may also be original'. (Chamberlin, E. (WYAAS). 2005. 'Warley. Higher Oldfield Barn'). |
