TitleHemsworth to A1 Link Road, Archaeological Investigation (Trial Trenching)
DescriptionASWYAS undertook a programme of archaeological trial trenching and targetting excavation from January 2008 to May 200, prior to the development of the Hemsworth to A1 link road. In total the work involved the excavation of 239 evaluation trenches, many of which were targeted on crop marks and/or geophysical anomalies. From this evaluation 32 open area excavations were also undertaken encompassing an area of 14200 square metres (PRN 13189).

Trenches 14,15,20,73,75,125,126,127,128,129,132,145,146,217,218,219,220 were not excavated.
Trench 8 (a N S trench) discovered a linear feature which was later interpreted as a plough furrow.
Trench 9 (running north east to south west) contained a single ditch running north to south and trench 10 contained 2 ditches running roughly east to west. together the ditch features in trenches 9 and 10 formed two sides of a rectilinear enclosure and trench 10 contained two Romano British pottery sherds.
Trench 11 had a single north to south ditch which contained a sterile fill.
Trench 17 contained a single ditch with no artefactual material and an undated ditch was also found in trench 38.
Trench 51 contained 5 undated ditches.
In trench 52 a single ditch contained firecracked cobbles and a single sherd of South Yorkshire greyware pottery. A single ditch was also discovered in trench 57 with two sterile fills.
Trenches 57, 58 and 59 which were on a east north east to west south west alignment contained single undated ditches.
Trench 60 contained 6 intercutting ditches interpreted as boundary features andtrench 64 contained an undated pit/treebole.
Trench 78 contained and undated ditch and trench 89 two undated ditches, one on a north south orientation and one on a north north east to south south west orientation.
Trench 91 contained a single undated ditch on a north north west orientation and trench 110 also contained a single undated ditch.
Trench 138 contained a gully terminus and two pits/ditch terminii and trench 140 contained a north south ditch which contained 3 fragments of animal bone.
Trench 141 contained 2 ditch features one of which had a sterile fill and the other contained 11 fragments of animal bone.
Trench 152 contained a north south aligned ditch feature which was cut by a pit feature initially though to be a cremation as it contained white flecks though to be calcined bone. environmental sampling found the pit fill to contain only charcoal and mollusc shell.Trench 153 was excavated to further analyse trench 152 but nothing further was visible.
Trench 164 discovered a single west south west to east north east ditch which contained a sterile fill.
Trench 176 contained a pitch which due to a charcoal fill was bulk sampled and trench 177 contained a pit or ditch terminus.
Trench 179 which ran north east to south west contained which contained a sterile fill.
Trench 180 contained an undated pit or ditch terminus.
Trench 181 contained two ditches one on a north north west alignment and one on a south west to north east alignment. The secondary fill of the north north west ditch contained two sherds of 2nd to 4th Century Romano British pottery.
