TitleNewlay Shell Filling Factory
DescriptionNewlay National Ordnance Shell Filling Factory. The Ministry of Munitions took over the Shoen Steel Wheel site in 1915 located at Hunters Greave located between the Leeds to Liverpool Canal and the River Aire at Newlay. Initially the factory which was constructed in 1916 employed only men and later 30 women were employed. Eventually the site which covered 5 acres employed 1000 people. The Factory manufacture 9.2' shells. Leodis the Leeds Photographic Image archives contains photographs taken of staff at the factory dated between 1914 and 1918 and another which is dated c.1918 (Leodis viewed 09/01/2014).
The Ordnance Survey Mapping does not show the filing factory which is largely due to the dates available (1909 and 1948) and in 1948 the site is occupied by Kirkstall Forge Goods Station. The site now (2014) is undeveloped.
