Greenhill was the subject of an archaeological assessment by Colum Giles in 1980 as part of the WYAS/RCHME Rural Houses Survey. The photographic images and sketch plan produced by the assessment are held by WYAAS (Giles, C. (WYAS/RCHME). 1980). The fieldwork report is transcribed below: 'This is a stone house, dated 1711. The interior of the house was not inspected, and these notes are drawn from external evidence only. The house is of two storeys, faces south and is built of coursed gritstone masonry. It has a double pile linear plan of three cells. On the south front the windows have recessed splayed mullions on the ground floor and flush mullions on the first floor. The doorway has a square head and broad chamfered surround; the lintel is inscribed 'I M G 1711' (Greenwood family?). The door opens into a passage running right through the house; there is an opposing door in the north wall. To the east of the passage lies the house body, heated originally by a firehood backing onto the passage; the fire area is still lit by two light fire window. Beyond the housebody is the parlour, heated by an external stack which is probably original. The west cell was unheated originally, and provided service rooms or, more likely given the presence of an extensive area at the rear of the house, a shop or storage area. The rear of the house probably gave a number of unheated rooms; all were lit originally by windows with flush mullions. The first floor gives chambers to both front and rear'. Hand written notes below text read: 'Slight differences in masonry on the east gable wall, together with the late nature of the first floor windows at the rear and the absence of evidence that these windows replaced earlier openings, suggest that the house was built with a continuous outshut raised c.1800 to give a full double pile plan'.
