Title | House at Friendly, Warley |
Description | House at Friendly, Warley. House originating in the early 18th century or earlier. This house at Friendly (SE 05326 24221) was the subject of an archaeological assessment by Colum Giles in 1980 as part of the WYAS/RCHME Rural Houses Survey. The photographic images produced by the assessment are held by WYAAS (Giles, C. (WYAS/RCHME). 1980). The images depict a two storey house, the principal frontage faces south. It is situated in an elevated position overlooking Burnley Road. The house is built of coursed sandstone quoined at the edges. It was formerly attached to a row of cottages to the west but these have now been demolished. The roof is gabled and is covered by stone flags. There are coping stones on the western gable. The chimney is an internal ridge stack situated against the west gable. The principal southern elevation has datable features, these consist of a five light window with recessed mullions and chamfered surround on the ground floor and a less tall row of five light windows with flush chamfered mullions on the first floor. These finish at eave height. Above the ground floor windows and doorway is a continuous hood mould. On the eastern end of this elevation is a doorway with a heavy stone lintel. These features can be ascribed to a late 17th to early 18th century date. The eastern gable has a doorway and wide single light window both with square surrounds and a single storey lean to structure. These may be later features. The western gable is rendered by displays the roof line of the earlier cottages. The rear was not recorded. It is difficult to establish the original plan from the available information. This may have been a single unit house originally with the doorway at the eastern end or it may have been a fairly high status house with a linear plan which became truncated to the west. The surviving cell probably held the parlour. The eastern angle is quoined. The western angle is quoined, seemingly, only on the upper floor. This suggests that eastern end is original and the western end and possibly the upper floor have undergone alterations. (Lunn, K.R. (WYAAS). 2014.
