Title | West End Quarry, Boston Spa |
Description | Disused quarry in the Cadeby Magnesian Limestone rock formations (PRN 12763). The quarry which was probably the source of building stone for Boston Spa village includes an inscription on the quarry face with the date 1768 and the intials IA in neat deeply incised 18cm high lettering. Although this does not neccesarily date the quarry according to the BSAHG (2009 p.9 ) ' it was probably done after the end of the quarry’s life and it is unlikely that someone would add such a date in a much later period'. The quarry is also represented by tool marks and spoil heaps. West End Quarry face is 22m long and 6m high. The face is part quarried and part natural outcropping. The face had old and modern graffiti. The quarry is included on the Boston Spa Archaeology and Heritage Group's Heritage List which will be incorporated into the Boston Spa Parish Council's Neighbourhood Plan and identified for preservation. |
