Title | Barn at Kayes Arms, Upper Whitley |
Description | Barn at Kayes Arms, Upper Whitley. Mid 19th century barn The barn at Kayes Arms was the subject of a planning application in 2003 for the 'Reuse and adaptation of existing barn to dwelling' (Kirklees Council planning reference number 2003/62/92889/E6). The architect's plans associated with this application have been retained by WYAAS (Anon. 2003.). Douglas Moir (Senior Archaeologist. WYAS) provided the consultation response. Moir described the barn as a typical example from the mid 19th century; comprising animal stalls on the ground floor with storage above. The ground floor retains flags with drainage channels and wooden partitions of the northern end from stabling. The building was probably depicted in the OS 6' 1st edition map of 1851 (sheet 261) as such could be regarded as a class III archaeological site as defined by the Kirklees UDP. The plan failed to show a number of existing features, including a blocked doorway on the ground floor. The plans did describe a four bay arrangement with king post trusses and an entry on the south gable. Moir described this as a recent opening with the original opening on the west elevation (now blocked as a window). The proposal to create a new 'cart' entrance on the east elevation which would be accessed up a short flight of stairs was considered to be inappropriate as it would result in the removal of section of the original structures and a fundamental alteration in the understanding of how this building originally functioned. The proposed development involved the re orientation of the building from west facing to east by means of the introduction of new elements which were unsympathetic and historically inappropriate. Moir recommended refusal of this application (Moir, D. (WYAS). 2003). |
