Title | 5, Barnsley Road. Upper Whitley |
Description | 5, Barnsley Road. Upper Whitley. Single storey cottage bearing a 17th century date stone. 5, Barnsley Road is briefly mentioned in an archaeological assessment fieldwork report of 1, Barnsley Road by Lucy Caffyn in 1982 (WYAS/RCHME Workers' Housing Survey). See PRN 12833. Caffyn describes 5, Barnsley Road as a single storey cottage which dates back to the 17th century with a date in the heavy door lintel. It was originally two cottages, each of two rooms. (Caffyn, L. (WYAS/RCHME). 1982). The close proximately to a small colliery in fields to the immediate east in 1850 also make it possible that this was a cottage occupied by mine workers (OS 1st edition 6' map. Sheet 261). The 17th century door surround, with chamfered heavy composite jambs and Tudor arched lintel, may alternatively be a reused feature. No other features visible on current on line map resources suggest an early date (https://maps.google.co.uk/. Web site accessed 10/10/2013). |
